A Passport is an official document that identifies you as a citizen of a country and allows you to travel internationally. If you enter or exit Vietnam as a Vietnamese citizen, you need a valid Vietnamese Passport (or Hộ Chiếu Việt Nam). If your Passport is about to expire, Viet Embassy allows you to renew it online.
Also known as Visa Exemption, it is a special Visa that allows Vietnamese Americans and their families to go to Vietnam. Passport

Then enter information according to instructions and upload photos of the old Passport and your portrait. The entire process often takes less than 15 minutes. When completed, your application will automatically be sent to the Embassy for immediate review and approval.
New Passports are valid for 10 years for people 14 years of age or above. For children under 14 years old, their Passports are valid for 5 years, at least 2 years or up until they reach 14 years of age.
Visa

According to the law, your Visa will be valid for 5 years or 6 months before your passport's expiration date, whichever is earlier.

Your child's Vietnamese Birth Certificate is valid forever.

This creates opportunity later to conduct travels, immigration, real estate purchase, education, and other areas in Vietnam. Your child will have full rights and privileges as a Vietnamese citizen whenever desired, and won't be treated as a foreigner (for example, foreigners cannot own real estate in Vietnam).
Especially, this helps your child keep the Vietnamese Nationality and prevent losing the citizenship later when the child grows up.
Applying for the Vietnamese Birth Certificate does not affect the American Citizenship of your child. Your child will have two citizenships and receive benefits from both.
